Start Counting Again
After a milestone, it is natural to look back. At Gateway Impact Church, we recently thanked God for four years of His faithfulness: from our first gatherings in a garage to the church family we are today. We should remember what He has done. But we cannot let the past become the measuring stick for everything He may do next.
Israel stood at a turning point in Exodus 12. They were still in Egypt when God spoke about a new beginning: “This month shall be for you the beginning of months” (Exodus 12:2). Their location had not changed yet, but God was already calling them to live as people preparing to move.
God changed Israel’s calendar before He changed their location. What can we learn when God says it is time to start counting again?
Reset: let God mark a new beginning
For generations, Egypt had shaped Israel’s daily life. But God did not ask them to measure their future only by the years behind them. He gave them a new starting point.
Your past matters, but it does not have to define the limits of your future. Perhaps you are grateful for what God has done, or perhaps you are carrying disappointment from what has not happened yet. Bring both to Him. Ask what needs to change in your heart and habits as you follow Him into what is next.
A reset is not pretending the past never happened. It is trusting God enough to let Him lead you beyond it.
Ready: prepare before the door opens
In Exodus 12:11, God told His people to eat the Passover meal with their belts fastened, sandals on, and staffs in hand. They were still in Egypt. Yet they were to be ready to leave.
Before God changed their circumstances, God changed their posture.
We often want to see the open door before we prepare. But preparation can be an act of faith. Keep praying. Learn God’s Word. Strengthen your family. Serve faithfully with what is in your hands today. Take the steps of obedience you already know to take.
Don’t wait until the door opens before you get ready.
Respond: move when God calls
The moment finally came. Pharaoh told the Israelites to go (Exodus 12:31). Readiness mattered because they had to respond, not just talk about a new season.
We can celebrate a fresh beginning and still cling to what is familiar. But when God makes the next faithful step clear, we must be willing to take it. That might mean reconciling with someone, serving where there is a need, leaving a harmful habit behind, or saying yes to a calling we have delayed.
For our church, the goal is not simply to become a bigger church. We want to be a ready church: grateful for four years of grace and willing to follow God into the next season. For you, too, the invitation is to reset your heart, prepare in faith, and respond in obedience.
This is not just another year. Ask God what it would mean to start counting again.
A prayer for today
Father, thank You for Your faithfulness in every season. Help us remember what You have done without becoming stuck in the past. Reset our hearts, make us ready for what You want to do next, and give us courage to obey when You call us to move. We surrender our plans, our fears, and our future to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
